Jewels of The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 04 January to 18 January 2020

photograph

Overview: The Gambia has been a popular Birdwatching destination since the 1970's and is still probably the safest African Country to visit. No wonder our tour leader Ashley has visited close to 20 times, leading two trips a year here since 2011.

As with all our trips, this is run at a relaxed pace, giving ample opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and in particular the many colourful bird species that can be found here. With 9 Kingfishers and 8 Bee-eater species for example, this guarantees to be a real feast for the eyes.

With little effort we can hope to see up to 300 bird species, with the photographers among us expecting to get quality images of a large percentage of these.

Throughout the trip we will have 3 guides and our own driver, making sure individual group members needs are catered for, so photographers for example can spend longer with a single species if they wish.

We spend time near the coast, but also travel inland to experience the real Gambia and it's various habitats and associated wildlife, including Hippo's, Bee-eater colonies, bird rich rice paddies and ancient forests.

The tour dates coincide with return flights from Birmingham and Gatwick, with just 30 minutes between the two departures, so Midlanders and those from the South East have equal opportunity to join this trip.

Please contact Ashley for a full itinerary and do check out the Gambia gallery through the link below for further temptation.

Swedens Crane Migration, Grebes & Great Food

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 8 April to 12 April 2020

photograph

Overview: The Lake Hornborga area of Sweden plays host to one of the most incredible bird spectacles to be seen in Europe. From late March to mid April, thousands of Common Cranes stop here to feed up on their journey to more northerly breeding grounds. The quantity of birds varies from year to year, but we have timed this trip to catch the peak of the birds movement and hope to see between 15 and 30,000 cranes at this time. In 2019 the peak count reached upwards of 27,000 birds, plus of course a wide variety of wildfowl that are present at this time. A highlight of this trip will be the sight and sound of thousands of Cranes coming into the lake at dawn, which really has to be experienced.

Whooper Swans and Goldeneye that stay on to breed in the area are joined by White Fronted & Pink-footed Geese, Wigeon, Pintail, Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler, Pochard and Tufted Duck in large numbers.
Other breeding birds in the area are setting up territory at this time and very evident are the grebes. Great-crested and Little Grebes are present, but in addition Red-necked and Slavonian Grebes breed here and often Black-necked pass through at this time, so it can be a Grebe bonanza.

We also visit other areas locally which are fabulous for birdwatching, sites where we could be lucky enough to see some birds that are either very rare in the UK, or don’t occur at all. Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Black Woodpecker, Hawfinch, even Eagle Owl and Pygmy Owl are all possible.

Our base for the 4 nights is a converted water mill, where the owner prides himself in offering top quality, locally sourced and organic food and wine.
This tranquil riverside location has some wonderful local walks to enjoy and we also will have a canoe safari on one evening in search of Beaver which are relatively common in the area.

The gentle flow of the water and sound of bird song is only broken by the occasional splosh of a beaver submerging as we approach.

This break has a very relaxed pace to it, with ample down time to enjoy the locality and its wildlife and to round off the package, we have a meal in a very well recommended local restaurant on one of our evenings.

Flights are in addition to this price and are with British Airways from Heathrow, coming in usually between £150 and £250 return.

The minimum number for this trip is 5, with a max of 10. There is a single supplement charge of £195, but please let us know if you are willing to share.

Trinidad & Tobago

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 14 April to 26 April 2020

photograph

Overview: The original inhabitants of Trinidad & Tobago, the Amerindians, referred to the islands as the 'Home of the Hummingbird'. But these beautiful islands have so much more besides these little jewels to offer the Wildlife watcher and Photographer.

Tanagers, Woodpeckers, Honeycreepers, Manikins, Herons and other water birds are all well represented. The flora you may have come across in your local florist, with Strelitzia, Heliconia and Gingers growing wild along with many many other flowers that attract butterflies and nectar drinking birds.

April is a prime to explore the caribbean, with warm and predominantly dry weather and best of all the birds are in breeding plumage and looking their best.

This trip neatly splits in two, with half the trip based at the tranquil Cuffie River Nature Retreat in the heart of Tobago and the other half at the world famous Asa Wright Nature Centre on Trinidad, which has to be on everyone's bucket list to visit.

While plenty of time is allocated on the tour to make the most of these two stunning venues, various day trips introduce us to much of the islands colourful birdlife and flora.

We will visit Little Tobago island, famous for its Red-billed Tropic Birds and Frigate Birds, who share the island with many other seabirds.

The incredible sight of hundreds of Scarlet Ibis coming in to roost at Caroni Swamp really has to be witnessed to be believed, they are such a vivid red.

Apart from other wildlife rich outings, an optional workshop on how to photograph Hummingbirds is included at the start of the tour, which could be invaluable if you want to take back some top images.

This tour is limited to just 10 places to maximise the experience.

Central England Spring Birding

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 27 May to 31 May 2020

photograph

Overview: Often overlooked as a birdwatching destination, Central England has some top birdwatching venues and a varied range of habitats and birdlife. One site we will be visiting is Upton Warren, a Worcestershire Wildlife Trust reserve which has recorded 97 species of birds in one day in May, not bad for a landlocked county. The site has breeding Avocets and Cetti’s Warbler and hosts a good variety of birds year round, with the number of species seen rising even further during migration periods.

Other wetland sites will make up the itinerary for this four night break, but we will also visit the Wyre Forest, where breeding birds include Redstart, Pied Flycatcher, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Hawfinch, Dipper and Mandarin.

The hotel we have chosen as a base for this break, is well known in the area and is a popular wedding venue, with it’s extensive grounds, so a very comfortable and tranquil place to begin and end each day.

We will head out each evening to eat locally, with many lovely and reasonably priced restaurants in the nearby villages, which include historic Henley-in-Arden, which is right on our doorstep.

At this time of year Ospreys and Slavonian Grebes will have returned to nest in the area and residents like Golden Eagle, Black Grouse and Pine Marten will be more visible than in other seasons.

Spain, The Pyrenees & Mediterranean Coast

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 18 June to 28 June 2020

photograph

Overview: This holiday is made up of five nights on the Mediterranean coast and five nights in the Pyrenees. With two very different locations we are guaranteed to see a diverse range of wildlife, across such varied environments.

We’ve been taking groups to the same Pyrenean location for many years and it is a breathtakingly beautiful location, set in tranquil surroundings, over 4,000ft above sea level, with just the sound of the birds and crickets for company. Here we have our own Vulture feeding station on an adjacent hillside, which is possibly the only place you can see all four European vulture species together.

The feeding area has three hides surrounding it, giving unsurpassed views of these fascinating birds. On the day of the feed, we will witness in excess of 400 vultures come to feed, mainly made up of Griffon Vultures, but Black (Monk) and Egyptian Vultures are steadily making a comeback in the area, thanks largely to this conservation project we are proud to be a part of.
The Lammergeiers are the main attraction here though and we can often have up to 40 individuals at the feed and on the following days. Anyone lucky enough to see Lammers elsewhere on a holiday, may have recognised the silhouette of a bird high in the sky, but here they are feeding just a few feet from you, quite magical creatures.

We also have a local hide to photograph or watch Golden Eagles and another hide overlooking a small pool. Here the smaller birds come to drink and bathe, which include Dartford, Subalpine, Orphean & Bonelli’s Warblers, Rock & Cirl Buntings, Hoopoes, Serin, Crested Tit, plus many other more common species.

Obviously it’s not just birds up here, with over 100 butterfly species recorded locally, like this Provence Orange-tip, some fabulous flora, some of which is endemic to the Pyrenees and views to die for, it’s a perfect location for photography of all types, birdwatching, general wildlife watching, walking and if you’re an artist, you’ll be spoilt for choice of subjects. Sunset is one of the most magical times here, as Nightjars take to the wing, Scops Owls begin to call and Red Deer emerge from the trees to feed in front of the house.

Our base on the coast, where we spend our first and final four nights of this break is very different. We’ll be close to the town of Empuriabrava, which is stepped in history. In fact the name of the town comes from it once being a major stronghold for the Roman Empire.
However it’s our proximity to several nature reserves, that brought us to originally explore this area, which give us access to a different selection of habitats and therefore bird species.
Literally on our doorstep is a reserve with tidal pools, salt marsh and woodland, where White Storks can be found nesting. Other likely species which can be found here include Montagues Harrier, Rock Sparrow, European Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Glossy Ibis, Greater Flamingo, Black-winged Stilt and more Nightingales than you’d believe were possible in one place.

From here we can explore various other sites locally, where we can hope to see all three Swift species, Common, Pallid and Alpine, European Roller, Greater-spotted Cuckoo, Red-backed & Woodchat Shrikes, Orphean Warbler, Cirl Bunting, Spoonbill, Purple Heron, Crested Lark and many more

Sri Lanka - Birds, Leopards & Blue Whales

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 19 November to 5 December 2020

Overview: With so much to see in this wonderful little country, we have extended our original tour to 16 nights, enabling us to visit some of the wildlife rich areas in the North of the country, in addition to the well known sites in the southern and central regions. This will increase our chances of seeing key species like Sri Lanka Leopard and Sloth Bear.

We have chosen to stay at some of the best accommodation in Sri Lanka, so along with great food, we can enjoy comfortable, restful nights between our wildlife watching.

Sri Lanka's bird list tops 430, including 33 endemics, and with the help of a highly experienced English-speaking guide, who will be with us throughout the tour, we will see most of them, including the rare Serendib Scops Owl, which was only discovered in 2001! Our visit coincides with the presence of winter visitors, including waders from Siberia and songbirds from the Himalayas.

In addition to the abundant birdlife, other wildlife we can expect to see are Marsh Mugger Crocodile and various land mammals such as Grey Langur and Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, Water Buffalo, Sambar and Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Indian Fruit Bat, Sloth Bear, Leopard and Asian Elephant. On top of all this, our visit to the south coast is timed to coincide with a calm sea and the presence of Blue Whales, as well as several other whales and dolphins, which can often be seen from a boat at close range. Sri Lanka also has 244 species of Butterflies.

Wildlife of the Applecross Peninsular

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 4 June to 11 June 2021

photograph

Overview: Applecross is a small village located in the north west of Scotland, one of the most beautiful areas of the British Isles. Everywhere you look, the scenery here is breathtaking, with views across the lochs to the Inner Hebrides, mountain ranges and rolling moorland, it’s no wonder the wildlife is so rich here.

Approximately the size of Greater Birmingham, the Peninsular in which Applecross sits, has just 150 residents, so is a real escape and you may not see another person all day on some of the walks, lochs and beeches.

The mountains near Applecross support Ptarmigan and Golden Eagle, the moors and Lochans have Divers and Skuas and in the surrounding sea lochs live Dolphins, Seals, Otters and White-tailed Eagles. The area is also a true stronghold for Pine Martens, which are often attracted to the gardens here for supper!

On this holiday we will explore the best sites to get close to much of this wildlife, while enjoying the stunning landscape and some great food. A wildlife cruise may give us sightings of Dolphins, or even of a Whale, or Basking Shark.

This break runs back to back with our annual June visit to the Grant Arms to explore the wildlife in and around the Cairngorm National park and the Black Isle, so why not link the two breaks and benefit form a free additional night at the Grant Arms on us.
